Aloha!

Makau 'O Pono, a brand created in 2009 by Rex Michael Domingo, strives to produce completely authentic and hand-carved Hawaiian fish hook necklaces and bracelets.

Born in the Philippines before immigrating to the United States as a young child, Rex spent much of his life in Hawai'i, where he grew to love the Pacific Ocean, the islands' lush nature, and the native culture. Each fish hook necklace he creates is infused with his passion for the Hawaiian spirit.

Makau History

Known in Hawaiian as makau, the fish hook pendant stands for everything that is pono, or good, and promises its wearer prosperity, strength, safe passage, and good luck!

The fishhook was an invaluable tool for providing food to sustain the 'ohana (family). Lacking ore of any kind, the ancient Hawaiians used coral and stone tools to create practical, beautiful, and sometimes elaborate hooks using human bones, whale bones, animal bones, seashells, and wood. They produced hundreds of styles for different kinds of fish and fishing techniques.

Many carvers consider these pieces to carry the essence of its owner, which makes them priceless and filled with mana, or spiritual power!
